Why Hrithik's Agneepath REALLY worked?

When superstar Amitabh Bachchan's Agneepath released in theatres in 1990, it flopped at the box office.

Years later, when Agneepath got remade and released in theatres, it got the best opening ever, and is well on its way to becoming a blockbuster.

So what clicked?

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh explains, "When the film released in 1990, Amitabh Bachchan's voice was very different. The audience thought that there was some technical problem and actually started walking out of theatres. After the initial reactions, Bachchan dubbed for the film again but the damage had already been done."

Media professional and industry observer Abhijit Mhamunkar adds that the film was very unconventional and ahead of its time. "People were not ready to accept Amitabh Bachchan in such an avatar," he says.

Journalist Shaikh Ayaz compares both films: "The original Agneepath was a character-driven film, to such an extent that we only remember Amitabh Bachchan and his once-in-a-lifetime great performance.

"The new Agneepath focuses on the plot and gives each character its due. For instance, the first half belongs to Rishi Kapoor, not Hrithik Roshan. On his part, Hrithik plays Vijay Dinanath Chavan differently -- he doesn't speak much, has a simmering anger and is boiling from within. Amitabh's pain could be seen while Hrithik's is hidden," he says.

"What really clicked for the new film was its name, Agneepath," Taran Adarsh adds. "It has a tremendous recall value. Amitabh Bachchan's Agneepath may have flopped but it has achieved cult status over the years."

The ensemble cast of the new film is another reason why it worked. "Amitabh Bachchan created magic when he played Vijay Dinanath Chavan," says Taran Adarsh, adding, "When Hrithik stepped into Bachchan's shoes to play Vijay, he did complete justice to the character."

Besides Hrithik, Sanjay Dutt's Kancha Cheena and the introduction of Rishi Kapoor's character made the audience curious.

Adarsh says "Rishi Kapoor's character took everyone by surprise. He was exceptional as Rauf Lala. Sanjay Dutt was mind-blowing too. His evil look in the promos had created a lot of anticipation amongst his fans."

Mhamunkar agrees that it was the star cast that pulled the audience into cinema halls. "Everyone is talking about Rishi Kapoor's role in the film," he says. "Agneepath's power lies in director's vision and the scriptwriters. They did not let the film loss its original flavour."

Mhamunkar also feels that it has been a while since audiences have seen a masala movie.

"Don 2 released last month and did not attract a lot of audience," he says. "This month, we have seen very few big releases. Players opened to a lukewarm response. Agneepath came at the right time."

The film's promotion was another vital factor that worked in its favour.

"The film was promoted as Agneepath, rather than a Hrithik Roshan film," Mhamunkar says. "The promos were popular, and the Chikni Chameli  song, picturised on Katrina Kaif [ Images ], added to the hype. The film is backed by Karan Johar, which automatically increases the anticipation amongst the audience."

Grapevine has it that this film will probably go on the floor in March 2012.

How Riteish and Genelia fell in love!

She's chirpy. He's chilled. Together, they are perfect.

And yet, unlike most couples who spend half their career discussing their love lives in print, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza didn't breathe a word.

After going steady for nearly nine years, the duo has decided to walk down the aisle on February 3.

We compile a timeline of their togetherness.

2003

The romance blossomed on the sets of Tujhe Meri Kasam, a remake of Malayalam hit, Nirom marking the debut of former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh's son with Genelia, best known for her Parker commercial with Amitabh Bachchan.

The duo played childhood best friends oblivious to their true feelings about each other in the movie, which did ho-hum business at the box office.
The courtship period engaged in more fun and frolic on the sets of Indra Kumar's silly comedy, Masti, wherein two played a newly married duo -- she's controlling, he's hen-pecked. The film also starred Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivadasni and Amrita Rao.

Masti scored big on the box office and brought Riteish notice for his droll comic timing but failed to do Genelia any favours.
The new few years turned into a career-building exercise for Riteish and Gen even as they dated on a sly.

Riteish worked around his humourous appeal to star in films like Kya Kool Hain Hum, Bluffmaster, Malamaal Weekly, Apna Sapna Money Money, Dhamaal and Heyy Babyy.

Genelia became a household name down South with her bubbly avatars in Telugu flicks like Samba, Sye, Bommarillu, Mr Medhavi and Santosh Subramaniam.
No matter how much they guarded their privacy, the grapevine couldn't help speculating about their togetherness.

All the more after Genelia's return to Bollywood with a bang, courtesy her much liked portrayal of Aditi in Abbas Tyrewala's Jaane Tu... Yaa Jaane Naa opposite debutante Imran Khan.

The star-studded premiere, interestingly, also featured boyfriend Riteish on the guest list.

Genelia, on her part, obliged by posing on the red carpet for Ritesh-starrer Aladin's premiere. But when we asked her to comment on the relationship, Genelia stuck to her 'good friends' stance.
Sometime in May, Gen and Ritz were spotted having a private dinner with a bunch of friends at a restaurant in Mahim, a Mumbai suburb.

Onlookers revealed to snooping paparazzi how the pair appeared relaxed and much-in-love.

And there were some who even snapped a few shots on a cell phone camera. Reportedly, they were celebrating Deshmukh Sr's appointment as the Central Minister of Heavy Industries.
In the seventh year of their relationship, things didn't appear too hunky-dory.

Following their constant denial about each other, rumours of link-ups with other co-stars began to surface.

If Genelia was asked about her equation with reel-life sweethearts of Chance Pe Dance and Force, Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham, Ritesh's proximity to Sri Lankan import, Jacqueline Fernandes, with whom he worked on Aladin and Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, didn't go unnoticed.

Rumours of a strained relationship and subsequent patch-up circulated for a while only to die a natural death after the couple posed together at Mumbai Police Umang red carpet in December.
Guess true love conquers all.

And the duo was back to their vivacious selves arriving separately for the same event in popular celebrity fashion.

Like Shah Rukh Khan's Holi party in March. They put in a show together for Akshay Kumar's bash to celebrate the release of home production, Speedy Singhs but no one suspected anything.

Two months later, even as they readied to release their third film together, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, Ritesh announced his intentions to marry his longtime lady love in the romantic month of February next year to a local newspaper.
From hand-in-hand appearances to gushing about each other in print to enjoying all possible attention -- be it on social networking sites or pre-wedding bashes hosted by friends, Riteish and Genelia are clearly living it up before they officially turn man and wife on February 3.

Join us in wishing this level-headed couple a happily married life.

Who Is Shirish Kunder?

Shirish, 38, is an electronics engineer by training and worked for Motorola before hitting Bollywood.

The first film he worked on as an editor was the Sunny Deol and Manisha Koirala-starrer Champion that released in 2000.

He edited films like the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Aankhen (Director: Vipul Shah) in 2002, Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na and Imtiaz Ali's first film Socha Na Tha.

It was in the editing room when he was cutting Main Hoon Na with Farah that love came-a-calling.
Farah and Shirish married in 2004. Two years later, the movie editor turned director with Jaan-E-Mann in 2006, starring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. The film didn't do well, though it had some good songs.

Salman and SRK were still friends then; their falling out would occur a couple of years later at Katrina Kaif's birthday party.

Farah was one of SRK's best buddies -- there was even talk that Shirish and she would move into an apartment in the building SRK was building behind his mansion, Mannat.

Somewhere down the line, for reasons that are as cloaked in mystery as Karisma Kapoor's break-up with Abhishek Bachchan, Shirish got SRK's goat.

Farah and SRK parted ways on a rather sour note when the superstar turned down Tees Maar Khan, which Shirish had written.

Farah had to make a choice between the father of her triplets and the man who had made her a big director. She chose hubby.
Just before Sunday's incident at the Agneepath party, the Mumbai Mirror newspaper claimed SRK mentioned that he had promised his children he would slap Shirish for that hurtful tweet.

Farah Khan denied that her husband had provoked SRK, but newspaper accounts pieced together from guests present early on Monday morning alleged that Shirish had needled the superstar.

The morning after he finally made the front pages, the Joker director tweeted: 'Some of your jokes on the incident were very funny. Including the ones on me. Keep up the humour. I'll be back soon.'

Farah and Shirish do not plan to file a police complaint against SRK. 'Thanks for all your concern & wishes,' Shirish tweeted. 'We are very grateful. Contrary to rumours, we have no intention of filing a FIR or police complaint.'

When the maar-peet was going on, newspapers reported that SRK told Shirish to tell his 'friend' that he would take care of him too, not so politely, of course.

Will said Shirish buddy, who lives about 1.5 miles from SRK's home, now take up the challenge?

Why Cast Feeling For Heros

Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli is the one who always speaks his mind and doesn't mince words. He expressed his honest opinion on the 'never-ending' caste based division between the fans in the Telugu Film Industry.

Recently, one of his enthusiastic fans questioned him - Why not all the Heroes in the Industry come on one platform and show their unity to put an end to the caste based division?, Rajamouli replied,"Such a gesture has been done by Heroes many times but sadly caste is too deeply ingrained in the minds of people".

"This is not something new in Tollywood. It is a common practice. The fans worship the heroes who belong to their caste and will abandon the films of others, indulge in mud-slinging activities and finally end up creating unhealthy environment. This happened in the past, happening now and will happen in future as well," said a film critic.

Sadly, the well educated people were active members in the 'discrimination of caste', which is prevailing in our so-called modern society. Though we are in the 21st century, people still think, dream and eat caste. Killing a man's thought is more important than killing him. So, Let's Kill Caste Feeling!

Shahrukh Khan and Shirish Kunder episode

Farah Khan is extremely upset with the brawl that took place between Shahrukh Khan and her husband Shirish Kunder at Sanjay Dutt’s party. Farah Khan expressed her shock in the following words, "Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way to sort out a problem and that it means the person who is hitting has either a professional or personal crisis going on and it saddens me to see him doing the same," Farah said in an official statement.

Shirish Kunder denied filing any complaint against Shahrukh Khan, he said, "Thanks for all your concern and wishes. We are very grateful. Contrary to rumours, we have no intention of filing an FIR or police complaint," tweeted Kunder.

Shahrukh Khan arrived at the party around 4:30 am straight from the filmfare awards with his three bodyguards when everyone was having a ball. He went straight to Shirish, pulled him down through his long hair. "We didn't know what was happening. We saw SRK enter. Then we saw him head towards Shirish from behind the director. SRK pulled Shirish down to the ground by his long hair. We were all shocked. We had never seen SRK behave this way before," said an eyewitness.

"Before anyone could react, Baba Dewan, the owner of Aurus, ran in and intervened. SRK told Dewan to keep out. Dewan said the place belonged to him and he must intervene. The fight would've been prolonged had Sanjay Dutt not pulled SRK away from the ugly scene," the eyewitness added.

Farah Khan came to know about the uncanny incident in the morning as she was shooting the entire night for Bela Sehgal's ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Nikal Padi’. Shahrukh and Farah Khan had a fall-out years back when SRK refuses to star in Shirish Kunder’s ‘Joker’ and also when Kunder poked fun at Shahrukh’s ‘Ra.One’

Farhan Akhtar runs to Pakistan

Farhan who plays Milkha Singh in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's forthcoming 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is geared up to shoot in Pakistan. Rakesh Mehra wants no stone left unturned to add authenticity for his biopic of the legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh.

Rakesh Mehra plans to shoot at Muzaffargarh district in Pakistan, where Milkha Singh was born.

As we all know 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is the biopic of the legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh. He was born in Muzaffargarh near Multan in Pakistan. Later, he crossed the border to Ferozpur and then travelled to Delhi by train with other refugees, after witnessing his parents being killed in a massacre during the partition.

Rakesh Mehra confirms, "We are keen to shoot on the borders of Pakistan to add more authenticity to the film since Milkha was born in one of the villages there. We will be applying for permissions (to shoot there) soon."

Interestingly however, the production team which has done extensive research along the border areas of Pakistan as well as India, feels that since the topography of both countries is similar, they would be able to shoot in India without major problems. "But Rakeyshji is keen to apply for permissions before taking this call," says the source from the unit.

Farhan, on his part, has devoted all his energy to getting ready to play the Flying Sikh. Over the past few weeks, the actor has been going through rigorous training schedules to get into shape. In fact, he has already started growing his beard and hair to play the part authentically. Mehra's film also stars Sonam Kapoor in a special role and is likely to hit the floors in March.

'Agneepath' is a clean hit

It was predicted in this column last week that 'Agneepath' would enjoy opening collections in the range of 60 crores. The film's acceptance went as per the script, what with the Karan Johar production raking in over 62 crores at the box office in it's extended four day weekend.
The film's journey was nothing less than a thrilling ride though. The first day collections were a staggering 22 crores, hence creating a new opening day record while eclipsing the earlier record set by 'Bodyguard' less than six months ago. The film crashed in a big way on the very next day with a fall of 50%, hence sending shock waves in the industry. However just when it seemed that all predictions would fall flat and there won't be any redemption round the corner, the Hrithik Roshan starrer recovered on Saturday and then went on to record a very good Sunday, hence bringing the collections back to a very healthy number.

While Hrithik Roshan would be content that he has now enjoyed the biggest ever opening of his career and is all set to celebrate his first 100 crore earner in the running, it is yet to be seen that whether the film covers any greater distance than that. Reason being that word of mouth is largely mixed and even those who haven't seen Amitabh Bachchan's 'Agneepath' have diverse views. On the other hand bumper opening of the film has ensured that a 'hit' tag is already in it's kitty and a superhit could well be on the cards if weekdays stay on a decent note.

The film has an advantage of a relatively easy week ahead ('Gali Gali Chor Hai' is the sole competition) which means 'Don 2' record of 105 crores is all set to be beaten. However whether the film would surpass the 115 crore set by 'Ra. One' and 'Ghajini' would be decided only on the basis of how the weekdays perform.

Katrina Kaif to romance Kamal Haasan?

Bollywood hottie Katrina Kaif has certainly struck a purple patch! The hottie might turn out to be that lucky girl to romance not just one, but two of India’s greatest veteran actors from south.

Rumours are abuzz that Kat is being considered to play Rajinikanth’s love interest in ‘Kochadaiyaan’. But even before she is about to make an entry into Kollywood, speculations are rife that the actress is being discussed for Kamal Haasan’s next ‘Thalaivan Irukiran’.

If the latest buzz that is doing the rounds is to be believed then Tamil film star Ajith too might be a part of the film. The film will be produced by Aascar Ravichandran.

When a daily contacted Ravichandran, he refused to divulge details about the film but did not deny considering the Bollywood babe for the film.

Katrina seems to be all set to raise the already hot temperature soaring down south!

'Zanjeer ' sequel by Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan

Veteran Telugu actor Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja is all set to make his Bollywood debut with a remake of 1973 blockbuster ‘Zanjeer’. The 27 year old actor will be playing the iconic character of Vijay, portrayed by legendary Amitabh Bachchan in the Prakash Mehra production.

Talking to a tabloid, a source said, “The 27-year-old Ram Charan is already a youth icon in the south Indian film industry. His film ‘Magadheera’ has become one of the biggest hits of all times in the Telugu industry. In his five year long film career, Ram Charan has done just five films and is known to be extremely choosy. He has finally decided to work on the remake of ‘Zanjeer’, which will go on floors in the next couple of months.”

Teja’s spokesperson confirmed the news to the tabloid and said, “He has given his nod to the project. However, we would like the producers to make the official announcement for the film.”

Looks like Bollywood is keen on erasing language barriers to widen its horizon.

I had my own questions about ‘Dirty Picture’ role: Vidya

Basking in all-round appreciation for her performance in ‘The Dirty Picture’, actress Vidya Balan has said she had her own share of questions about the role initially, but eventually the film turned out to be a life - changing event for her.

In ‘The Dirty Picture’, directed by Milan Luthria, Vidya has portrayed the character loosely based on Silk Smitha, a Southern actress noted for her erotic roles.

Asked if she was confident or sceptical about doing the movie, she said, "I had my share of questions. There was one thing that I knew - that if I was going to do it then I must give it my all. If I felt I won`t be able to give it my all

then I won`t have done the film."

"I am glad I did not let it pass and did this film because it has been life-changing for me in more ways than one," the 34-year-old maintained.

Vidya has bagged the Best Actress trophy for ‘The Dirty Picture’ at almost all award functions, but ask which co-actor`s work she admires besides her, and pat comes the reply, Priyanka Chopra.

"I like Priyanka...she is an actress whose work I like. She is always trying to do something different which I appreciate. I am not going by any of her particular performance but I like Priyanka."

Vidya is touched by the appreciation coming from fans and industry friends. "I feel humbled that people think I must get Best Actress award. My first award was for my debut (Hindi) film (Parineeta). It will always remain special. It feels nice to receive an award, it is a form of appreciation which remains with you forever," she said.

This year, Vidya will be seen in Sujoy Ghosh`s `Kahani`, where she plays a pregnant lady staying abroad, who comes to India in search of her husband.

"`Kahani` is a mystery film and I won`t be wrong if I say that in Hindi cinema we have not had a mystery film for a long time. `Kahani` is edgy, pacey and we have got great response from the promos," she said.

Wedding Bells For Deepika?

Sanjay Dutt's top ten Performances!!

10. Eklavya

Pot-bellied, out of shape and seemingly corrupt, Dutt's Inspector Pannalal Chohaar showed us a different side of the actor, one unafraid to give up the glamour and enter the character's skin.

Hats off to director Vidhu Vinod Chopra for making it happen.

9. Sadak

Mahesh Bhatt was a director who used Dutt well, always exploiting his lean, hungry look, his sleep-deprived eyes, his junkie swagger.

In Sadak, a strange but effective Taxi Driver rip-off, Dutt played Ravi, a cabbie who falls in love with a prostitute.

8. Haseena Maan Jaayegi

Dutt's action roots were always strong, but the actor showed genuine comic spontaneity in this David Dhawan caper, the first of several where he went toe-to-toe with funnyman Govinda and more than held his own.

7. Mission Kashmir

In this Vinod Chopra film, Dutt played Inayat Khan, a tough cop dealing with terrorism and familial baggage, having lost a young son in a tragic accident.

A subtle performance with an appropriately stiff upper lip, Dutt did very well in the film, stealing leading man Hrithik Roshan's thunder.

6. Saajan

This Lawrence D'Souza romance saw Dutt play a limping orphan, an introverted poet hiding behind the bluster of his friend, Salman Khan.

Khan had the role of the charmer but it was Dutt, uncharacteristically quiet and sober, who walked away with the girl (Madhuri Dixit) and the applause.

5. Naam

This Mahesh Bhatt hit saw Dutt frequently getting into trouble with the law, a youngster gone astray and eventually forced to work for a smuggler.

Dutt did very well to convey both boyish cocksureness and, later, helplessness as he descended into crime.

4. Khalnayak

This Subhash Ghai film sees Dutt at his most charismatic, playing an outrageous -- but frequently frightening -- villain called Ballu, a gangster who enjoys gamesmanship.

Equal parts terrifying and amusing, Dutt showed mammoth screen presence in the film.

3.Vaastav

Apparently based on the early life of Chhota Rajan, this Mahesh Manjrekar film saw Dutt at his most intense.

In a role that took him from a smiling pav bhaji seller to one of Mumbai's most feared gangsters, Dutt displayed conviction and range in one of his best performances.

2. Lage Raho Munna Bhai

How do gangsters fall in love?

Rajkumar Hirani's masterpiece saw Sanjay Dutt's Munna flounder for answers as he learnt about Gandhi, started speaking with the father of the nation, and tried to woo a radio jockey with all his heart.

It's a performance solid enough to keep us smiling, sometimes even with moistened eyes

1. Munnabhai MBBS

While Hirani's sequel might have been the better film per se, Dutt struck gold in the original.

A lovable gangster soaked in optimism who doles out magic hugs?

It's a preposterously tall order, but Dutt, at the height of his abilities, made it work -- and made it look effortless.
